Breeders' Cup Championships

Breeders' Cup

The Breeder's Cup is considered the Championships for North American thoroughbred racing. It was established in 1984 by leading breeder and owner John R. Gaines. The event takes place at a different horse racing track each year, often at Churchill Downs and usually within The United States. Generally known as the richest day in sports, The Breeder's now takes place over two days in early November and consists of 14 races. Fields of no more than 14 horses are selected for each event based on three criteria: One, performance in Breeder's Cup Challenge races; Two, a point system; and Three, the judgment of a panel of horse racing experts. Although several horses have won the same Breeder's Cup race twice, only one horse has won two different Breeder's Cup race. That was Zenyatta, who won the Ladies Classic in 2008 and the Classic in 2009.
