The Preakness Stakes is held on the third Saturday in May and is the second leg of the Triple Crown. Held at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland, the Preakness is run at a distance of 1 3/16 miles. Inaugurated in 1873, the Preakness trails only the Kentucky Derby in annual attendance. The record time for the Preakness is officially shared by three horses coming in at 1 minute 53.4 seconds. They are Tank's Prospect in 1985, Louis Quatorze in 1996 and Curlin in 2007. However there is a bit of controversy here concerning Secretariat?s Preakness run in 1973. The Daily Racing Form credits Secretariat with a 1:53.4 finish, equaling the race record, however due to a timer malfunction the official time given to Secretariat was 1:54.4.
